Pads, rotors, brake fluid, bleeding, calipers, brake lines and ABS β inspected, explained and repaired by experienced mechanics. We show you what's worn, give you a choice of parts quality, and quote before we start.
Every time you stop, brake pads press against the rotors and turn your car's motion into heat. That friction slowly wears both parts down. Meanwhile brake fluid absorbs moisture, rubber seals age, and road salt attacks lines and calipers. Regular service catches this early β before a $200 pad job becomes a $900 repair.
Pedal goes too far down or sinks while you hold it. Air, a fluid leak or a failing master cylinder.
Red BRAKE warning on the dash usually means low fluid or a hydraulic fault β not just worn pads.
Metal on metal. Pad material is gone and the steel backing plate is cutting into the rotor.
Wet spots inside the wheel or under the car, or a fluid level that keeps dropping.
Car pulls to one side when braking β sticking caliper or collapsed hose.
Hot, sharp smell or smoke from a wheel after driving β a brake is dragging.
ABS is switched off, and often traction and stability control with it.
Taking more distance to stop than you're used to is never normal.
Built-in wear indicators squeal when pads are low β the early warning before grinding.
Pulsing pedal or shaking steering wheel usually means uneven or warped rotors.
Old fluid has absorbed water and boils sooner under hard braking.
Road salt corrodes lines, slide pins and calipers under every Ontario car.
β Free brake check: every vehicle that comes into SM Auto gets a brake, tire, bearing and suspension check at no additional cost.
Most brake failures don't happen all at once. They start as a noise, a light or a soft pedal that gets put off. Here's what each problem can turn into.
Salt eats steel brake lines from the outside. They can look fine until a hard stop pushes pressure through a thin spot.
Fluid absorbs water every year. Water boils at a lower temperature than brake fluid, and steam compresses.
Once the friction material is gone, steel grinds on steel. Braking gets weaker and unpredictable.
A stuck piston or slide keeps one brake working harder than the other, or stops it from releasing.
When the ABS light is on, the anti-lock system is off. Normal braking still works, but the safety net doesn't.
Rotors worn below minimum thickness can't absorb heat properly and can crack.
DOT 3 fluid's minimum boiling point, new vs. once it has absorbed water (DOT 4: 230Β°C β 155Β°C)
Braking distance when you double your speed. Weak brakes hurt most at highway speed.
Most manufacturers' brake fluid interval, whatever the mileage
Our brake check. Every car that comes in gets one.
No guesswork, no surprise bills. Here's exactly what happens when you bring your car in.
Wheels off. We measure pad thickness and rotor thickness against the manufacturer's minimum, check for scoring, warping and rust lip, and test fluid moisture content.
We show you the worn parts and measurements, explain what's needed now vs. what can wait, and quote in economy, OE-equivalent and premium options. Wait in our waiting area with a hot drink while we work.
Old parts out. Hub faces cleaned of rust, caliper slides cleaned and lubricated, new hardware clips fitted, all bolts torqued to spec.
Electronic parking brake retracted and recalibrated, wear sensors replaced where required, and service indicators reset with dealer-level scan tools.
New pads are bedded into the rotors for full stopping power and quiet operation, then road-tested for pedal feel, noise and pull.
You get your old parts back on request, a clear invoice, and a 1-year / 12,000 km warranty β or 2-year / 24,000 km on premium parts.
Two shops can quote very different prices for "a brake job" β the difference is almost always the parts. Cheaper pads and rotors aren't unsafe when properly installed, but they wear faster, make more dust and noise, and are more likely to warp. Here's how the three levels compare so you can pick what fits your car and budget.
Other things that affect price: vehicle size and weight, rotor size, electronic parking brakes, wear sensors, seized or rusted hardware, and whether rotors can be reused.
Starting prices include parts and labour for most Japanese and Korean cars and small SUVs. European, luxury, large SUV and truck applications are quoted per vehicle. All prices plus HST. Call or walk in for an exact quote β most jobs are done while you wait in our waiting area with a hot drink.

Labour for additional brake work: $120/hr general Β· $140/hr specialty. Prices are estimates for common vehicles; seized hardware, broken bolts or performance brake packages may change the quote. We always call you before doing any extra work.
Why: Pads are the friction material that wears with every stop. Rotors are the discs they clamp onto β they wear thinner, can warp from heat and rust on the surface, causing vibration and noise.
How: We remove the wheels and calipers, measure rotor thickness, and replace pads (and rotors if below spec or damaged). Hub faces are cleaned of rust so new rotors sit perfectly flat, caliper slides are lubricated, new clips fitted, and pads are bedded in on a road test.
Why: Brake fluid is hygroscopic β it absorbs water from the air. Water lowers the boiling point (causing brake fade on hills or hard stops) and corrodes calipers, lines and the expensive ABS unit from the inside.
DOT 3 or DOT 4? We use exactly what your manufacturer specifies β it's printed on the reservoir cap. DOT 3 is used in most Japanese, Korean and domestic vehicles. DOT 4 and DOT 4 LV have a higher boiling point and are used in most European and many newer vehicles. Both absorb water over time, so both need changing.
How: We test the fluid, then push fresh fluid through each wheel in the correct sequence until clean fluid comes out, using a pressure bleeder or scan-tool ABS bleed where required.
Why: Air in the brake lines compresses, giving a soft, spongy pedal and longer stops. Air gets in whenever the system is opened β after a caliper, hose or line replacement, or if fluid ran low.
How: Each wheel is bled from farthest to closest to the master cylinder until no bubbles remain. On ABS-equipped cars, the pump is cycled with a scan tool to purge trapped air from the module.
Why: The caliper squeezes the pads onto the rotor. Salt and moisture cause slide pins to seize or pistons to stick, leading to uneven pad wear, pulling, overheating and a burning smell.
How: Seized slides are cleaned and re-lubricated. If the piston or seal is leaking or stuck, the caliper is replaced (remanufactured, new aftermarket or OEM), then the system is bled.
Why: Ontario road salt rusts steel brake lines under the car. A rusted line can burst under hard braking, causing sudden loss of brakes. Rubber hoses crack or collapse internally with age.
How: Damaged sections are replaced with new pre-formed or custom-flared corrosion-resistant line, fittings are sealed, and the system is bled and pressure-tested for leaks.
Why: The Anti-lock Braking System prevents wheels from locking in an emergency stop so you can still steer. When the ABS light is on, ABS β and often traction and stability control β is disabled.
How: We read the fault codes, check live wheel-speed data, and test sensors, wiring and tone rings to find the exact fault. Most issues are a single wheel speed sensor; pump or module faults are repaired, remanufactured or replaced and coded to the car.
